CANTOR IAN & HELENE CAMISSAR
Cantor Ian Camissar has held several prominent positions in the United Kingdom.
At the age of 19, he was appointed Cantor/Minister of the Harrogate Hebrew Congregation, the youngest Cantor/Minister of a Community in the United Kingdom.
Ian obtained a Hebrew Diploma from Leeds University and an MA from Geneva Theological College.
In 1995 he answered a call to take up the position as Cantor of the Mother Synagogue of South Africa, the Cape Town Hebrew Congregation.
In 2009, along with his wife Helene he started a company for the production of Tombstones for the Jewish and wider communities.
Ian feels that this is an extension of his work as a Cantor. He looks upon this work as a mitzvah and an act of kindness to the deceased and the members of the family.
He arranges meetings with the family to discuss what requirements they have concerning the Tombstone. He does this in a most sympathetic manner and often counsels the bereaved in their period of grief. His vast knowledge ensures that the Hebrew on the Tombstone is entirely correct.
Ian's wife Helene, is also a director of the company. Her skills of communication and dealing with the community stems from running her own very successful travel company for many years. Her clients still talk about her skills and patience in arranging things on their behalf and nothing was too much for her.
Together they provide a service to the community second to none. They have received many emails and calls expressing appreciation and gratitude for a job well done and particularly for the way in which they gave so much help in their clients time of grief.
